Cats have a way of finding their way into just about every facet of our
culture, so it’s no surprise that a few felines here and there found themselves in some pretty famous
roles in popular culture. Here are 5 of the most famous fictitious felines.
Tom (Tom & Jerry):
Known for chasing the little mouse Jerry around just about every location imaginable, Tom
the cat has been up to no good, scheming near-endlessly for the past 70 years. Tom has always been
recognized by his blue fur and pounty squint, a clear indication that no matter how badly he wants to be
in charge of his cat-and-mouse relationship, he’ll always come up shirt.
Sylvester (Looney Tunes):
The classic black and white puddy tat, Sylvester has been the resident kitty in the Looney
Tunes bunch for quite some time, almost always as a villainous cat in search of a snack named Tweety or a
mouse named Speedy Gonzales. And of course after all these years of desperation, he hasn’t once
succeeded. In fact, in the 90’s Sylvester and Tweety were on more or less good and amicable terms as they
started solving crimes together. Boy, I don’t know who has it worse between Sylvester and Tom.
Puss (Shrek):
The story of Puss In Boots goes back a long, long way, but not until Shrek 2 did we get a
modern version as voiced by Antonio Banderas. Suave and classy, Puss is a master swordscat and a smooth
operator, essentially becoming a Zorro-esque figure in the movie series. He’s even most recently had his
own spin-off series reach theaters, so fans of CG cats couldn’t be happier.
Garfield:
Everyone knows the fat orange cat who loves lasagna and hates Mondays. Garfield has been a
staple of the Funny Pages for over a decade and shows no sign of stopping any time soon. His trademark
dry sense of humor and general malicious behavior toward his owner and the dog that lives in his house is
still going on to this very day.
Felix the Cat:
Probably the cat that goes the furthest back in terms of screen presence, Felix the Cat is
one of the very first cartoon characters, period. A black cat with a bag of tricks, Felix has been
brought back a number of times and in a number of media, but right now he’s currently suffering from a
real definite place in the world. Is it about time for Felix the Cat to return to center
stage?
